SCENE 1: Looking for a Friend
Narrator: Once there was a monkey named Paydro and a great horned owl named Nick. They were best friends in the zoo. But the zookeeper had a better monkey and a better owl. So they were released back into their habitats. Nick went back to the forest and Paydro back to the jungle. But Nick missed Paydro.
(Owl cries.)
Owl: I wish I could find Paydro. Humm . . . humm . . . hum . . . hey. Maybe I could go find him. The address is 28185 Monkey Road, Amazon Jungle, Peru, South America 55832. That’s not far.
Narrator: He hooted.
Owl: It’s half a mile!
Narrator: And that’s when Nick started his great journey. Little did he know he would make many new friends.
SCENE 2: Meeting the Fireflies
Narrator: After fluttering ten yards that night, Nick saw something glowing.
Owl: HOO – HOO - Who is that?
Firefly M (to Firefly H): It sounds like a great horned owl.
Owl: HOO – HOO – Who is that?
Firefly H: We are FIREFLIES!
Owl: Oh, but why do you have your lights?
Firefly M: We have our lights to communicate.
Firefly H: Like to find a mate.
Owl: Can you shut your lights off please?
Firefly M: Sure.
Firefly H: Okay—but why?
Owl: My name is Nick and I don’t need your lights because I have good eyesight in the dark. I am looking for my friend Paydro the Monkey.
Firefly M: Can we come with?
Owl: Sure, you can follow me. Do you know where Paydro lives?
Firefly H: No, but our friend Miss Doe might.
Owl: Then let’s go!
Narrator: And off they went.
SCENE 3: Miss Doe Helps Out
Narrator: When they got 100 feet further Miss Doe sniffed the air.
Doe: Hi, fireflies! Who is your friend?
Owl: My scientific name is Bubo Virginianus but you can call me Nick.
Doe: Nice to meet you Nick. What are you guys doing wandering around the forest?
Firefly H: We’re looking for Paydro the Monkey.
Firefly M: So do you know anything about him or where he lives?
Owl: Do you?
Doe: Well, I, uh, heard Paydro is a dancing monkey and he sells banana cream oil.
Owl: HOO – Who from?
Doe: From Viper.
Owl: Dooooo yoooou want toooo come with?
Doe: Yes, please. Viper is 100 feet from here.
Firefly H: Let’s go!
Narrator: And off they went.
SCENE 4: A Snake Assistant?
Narrator: Viper was a boa constrictor who thought he was a rattlesnake. He stuck out his tongue and smelled them when they were 50 feet away.
Viper: Hisssssss! Over here!
Doe: Hi! We have a new friend named Nick.
(Nick snaps his bill.)
Viper and Owl (at each other): HISSSSSSS!
Firefly M: It’s okay, Nick. He won’t hurt you.
Owl: Do you know where Paydro is?
Viper: Why, I’m his assistant. I gather the ingredients for his secret recipe for banana cream oil.
Owl: COOOOOL!
Viper: Follow me!
Narrator: As they continued the journey, they talked about how fun it was to make new friends and communicate. They each shared a poem.
SCENE 5: Communication Poems
Narrator: Each animal has a different way to communicate. Owls hoot and fluff. Fireflies flicker. Deer sniff and flip their tails. Snakes hiss. Every animal communicates some way and it always comes out different!
Owl: Animals use communication, every animal in every nation. I communicate too, so do you!
Firefly M: We are fireflies, glowing bright. Others see us with our night light.
Firefly H: We might be very tiny. But we are also shiny.
Doe: I’m a white-tailed doe; I wander to and fro
searching for and finding sweet clover.
As I nibble on the grasses, I have no need for glasses
for my hearing is quite extra-ordinary.
Viper: Rattlesnake, Rattlesnake, slithers in the dry grass
Be careful when you pass;
It makes a loud sound with the rattles on its tail,
It sort of sounds like pebbles falling in a pail.
SCENE 6: Paydro At Last
Monkey: What’s all this commotion?
Doe: We are looking for a monkey named Paydro.
Viper and Owl: That IS Paydro!
Narrator: Nick was so excited he fluffed his feathers.
(Owl fluffs his feathers.)
Monkey: I’m so glad to see you—I’ve learned a special dance for you.
(Paydro does his dance.)
(All animals share their form of communication for applause.)
Narrator: All the animals became friends and lived happily ever after selling banana cream oil!
