Where I Am From
I am from the farm,
from cow pens to pig barns,
I am from the dust of the calf lots.
I’m from Case International and Chevy trucks,
from Grandpa Dick and Uncle Joe.
I’m from John and Barb’s branch,
mashed potatoes and gravy.
From the eye my uncle lost,
to a sliver of metal,
the reaction I made to keep my life.
Under the roof of our barn,
a newborn calf,
trying to walk
as the mother stands there, taking the talk.
