The Dakota Writing Project (DWP) is one of about 200 sites affiliated with The National Writing Project (NWP), "a collaborative university/school professional development program to improve the teaching and learning of writing in the nation's classrooms." Like NWP, DWP is dedicated to improving the teaching of writing in all disciplines from kindergarten through college.

Through the years, teachers involved in the Dakota Writing Project have also participated in Prairie Winds events. The projects are separate in what they emphasize, with Prairie Winds putting more focus on student writing and DWP more focus on teacher writing. Each project is a natural complement to the other. We believe it is beneficial to have a formal collaboration between the two projects and are working together to bring writing workshops to students and teachers across South Dakota.
